Your Questions About Bug Out Bag

Laura asks…

Where can I buy inexpensive but durable military surplus goods for bug out bag?

I’m working on my Bug Out Bag and need some inexpensive military gear – especially bags, such as drop leg pouches and butt packs. I also would like to find a good supplier of fresh MREs if anyone knows of one. Thanks.

Jenny asks…

What are good things to have in my bug out bag?

* A first aid kit.[13]
* Fire starting tool (i.e. Matches, ferro rod, lighter, etc.)
* A disaster plan including location of emergency centers, rallying points, possible evacuation routes etc.
* Professional emergency literature explaining what to do in various types of disaster, studied and understood before the actual disaster but kept for reference.
* Maps and travel information.[14]
* Standard camping equipment, including sanitation supplies.[15]
* Weather appropriate clothing (poncho, headwear, gloves, etc.)
* Bedding items such as sleeping bags & blankets.
* Enough medicine to last an extended evacuation period.

And don’t forget the most important thing of all…. Every traveler needs a towel.

Donald asks…

What does your bug out bag consist of?

I have decided to put together a bug out bag for a SHTF situation, and figured it would be a good idea to see what other people have so i dont forget something that would be useful. I have two US surplus day packs i will probably fill up. What do you have in yours and what is the bag?

Answer Man answers:

I use many duffel bags that i got for free, and one wooden ammo case that I refinished. I also have a few unmarked cardboard boxes.
My BOB is something I stick into the minivan and get out of town asap. I have no plans to hike out of town, I live in the middle of a large city.

12 MREs handpicked, all my favorite menus
32 bottles of water- Kirkland 16.9 FL oz each
various meal bars from the supermarket
tablets for purifying water
funny purple tablets for cooking with (military surplus), I bought lots and lots.
Mountain house dehydrated foods, 36 units, favorites only
water filter
2x collapsible 2L water bags
2x military OD green plastic canteens
titanium knife-fork-spoon utensil
as many matchbooks as I can cram into a 1 gallon zip lock bag
several cheap Bic lighters
metal camping cooking pot + lid
collapsible cooking rack that I made from aluminum

$200 in cash, $10s and $20s
one roll silver quarters (face value = $10, worth $130)
1 carton Grand Prix menthol cigarettes – for trade, sale, or personal use.
1 bag rolling tobacco, lots of paper slips for rolling. – for sale, trade, or personal use

a 3.2 million volt stun gun and LED flashlight
AK bayonet, Yugo style
mini crowbar, 18″
a FAK (I call it a field aid kit) I’m still adding stuff to it

3×15 min road flares
2×30 min road flares
3x coast guard approved signal flares
Camping Gaz piezoelectric 80W blue butane lamp
2x blue butane bottles (for the lamp)
1 wooden ammo case that holds lots and lots of glow sticks, and anything else fragile. Its has tons of padding, it was designed to take a 33 foot fall without any glow sticks breaking. 33feet is because that’s the highest I test the case falling. I threw it off the roof to the cold, hard concrete driveway below. I think its 33 feet, I’m really bad at math.
1 5x night vision monocular, waterproof
20 CR123 batteries
1x LED Lenser P7 flashlight,
3x AAA battery packs
1x trusty old Ti83 calculator sealed in plastic (to make water proof)
1- 4 man Coleman tent
2 sleeping bags (in case I bring someone with me)

all local area maps
spare battery pack (external, 12V) for GPS with hand crank charger (something I rigged up)
12 BLM maps covering everything within 150 miles of my house
1 really obsolete 1978 detailed street map book of LA and Orange county – something my parents uses, i have it in case the gps breaks. I am not buying a new one, even if they’re still in print.
1 book detailing wilderness survival
1 book detailing auto repair and troubleshooting
1 clear plastic ruler
1 book detailing medial aid
4 compasses- in case one broke.

For defensive purposes, my vehicle may be attacked, ambushed, or mobbed depending on the situation, I must be prepared for that.
A simple cardboard box holds 10x 30rd AK magazines, 12 clips of russian light ball for my mosin nagant, 5 clips of Czech AP for my mosin nagant, 35- 20 ga #3 buck, 50- 20 ga 3/4 oz slugs, orange and grey smoke emitters, two bricks of .22lr, various fireworks or firecrackers I believe may be used, and two machetes- one cheap walmart one for chopping and one expensive Ontario knife one for sawing. That would be put up front next to me between my passenger.
The few cardboard boxes part of my BOB holds even more ammo. 960 rounds of 7.62x39mm, 370 rounds 7.62x54mmr, 3660 rounds .22lr, 182 #7.5 birdshot, and many, many, many “firecrackers”.

The BOB is to get out of the city into the forests and be able to live out there for at least 2 months with occasional ventures into the city for more supplies and such.

Michael asks…

Is there a difference between getting a Bug-Out-Bag and a Go Bag for severe emergencies?

I have several nieces and nephews brothers and sisters and other relatives and we are trying to work to together in case of a any severe emergency that might happen rather its natural disaster manned made disaster or others.

But we are having problems which bag is suitable for us in case of any emergency. I have a huge family that are working together but trying to figure things out.

http://survivalcache.com/bug-out-bag/ Or http://www.thegallos.com/gobag.htm

Answer Man answers:

Are you going to let someone else dictate what you need in an emergency? Get a list of the contents of each and assemble your own. Much cheaper, too.

Carol asks…

Do you have a Bug Out Bag and if so was it prepacked or self packed? Which is better and or cheaper?

If the Haitian Earthquake has done anything for me its made me realize how stupid not being prepared for a disaster is. I want to be prepared. Should I buy a prepacked Kit and add some personal extras to it, OR should I put one together myself. I think putting one together would be more expensive.

Answer Man answers:

80% of what i have in my bags is from the 99 cent store. Fema has a program called CERT that will train you for free, usually through the fire department.. Go to the Red Cross internet sites for what you should have in preparation for a disaster. Imagine that you had a fire destroy your home.and decide what you NEED to exist for at least a week. Medications & water supplies should be near a door so you can access them. Water is more important than food as you can have a total system failure after only 3 days without it. You will need canned goods with something other than a high salt level, I like the MRI’s but almost all supplies need to be rotated after 6 months & MRI’s are pricey. We have an Armed Forces Appreciation Week when we recycle our disaster food. Get the list of what is in the pre packed & copy it from discount stores, checking dates then adapt it to your family size & remember the water & meds. There will be bathroom supplies- right? You can prep another bag for your rescue stuff, rubber & leather gloves, masks, ropes, blankets for shock & sun shields, a “tent” for privacy & at least one 5 gallon bucket? Bucket toilet seats are available & have plenty of garbage bags that fit the bucket & a shovel to bury the waste. Thank you for being prepared so that you can have a free mind to help others because the fire department isn’t 4 wheel drive. They will be going nowhere. They have limited supplies, usually buy their own food daily. The hospitals may be damaged as well so have enough meds on hand as well as alcohol & hand sanitizer & eye drops will be needed as well.

How The H1N1 Virus Turns Into Deadly Pneumonia

The h1n1 virus becomes deadly when it creates a perfect breeding ground for deadly Pneumonia
© Claudios Pics – Fotolia.com

The virus that causes the flu, Influenza, Attacks the cells in the lungs. Once inside of the respiratory cells the virus uses the cell’s normal reproduction process to copy itself. Once the cell is full of the flu virus, it kills off the infected cell and opens it up, releasing more of the virus to attack other cells.

Over a short period of time, the healthy respiratory cells die and pool up in the lungs. This process leads to a perfect breading ground for bacteria. The remnants of the dead cells become food for the bacteria. The normal healthy cells that are now dead, can no longer help fight off the bacteria , or block the bacteria from crossing into the blood and lung tissue .

As the bacteria continue to feed off of the ever increasing dead cells, they continue to multiply. Your body naturally sends white blood cells to fight off the bacteria, creating more fluid in the lungs. The fluid begins to fill the small airways in your lungs, making your lungs less effective in what they were meant to do, replenish your blood with oxygen.

With more fluid in the lungs and less oxygen to the blood, you begin to feel like you can’t catch your breath. The horrible result, if left untreated, is pneumonia. The pneumonia effectively causes you to drown as less blood is oxygenated. This causes the the organs and tissue throughout the body to die, as normal amounts of oxygen cannot reach them through the blood.

This is why health officials are so concerned about what seems to most people to be just a flu virus. With your body unable to deal with this new virus, the virus causes much more cell damage, creating more opportunity for bacteria to infect the lungs. A seemingly simple virus could lead to a much worse case of bacterial pneumonia.

Your Questions About Aerogarden Seed Kits

Donna asks…

What Aerogarden seed kit to grow next?

For the past 5 months I’ve been killing it with the Gourmet Herb Kit (Cilantro, Chives, Italian Basil, Red Basil, Dill, Mint, Parsley) with my Aerogarden. But now it’s time for a new kit. These are my options:

1) Cascading Petunias – Who doesn’t love pretty flowers?
2) Salsa Garden – Cherry Tomatoes & Jalapeno Peppers
3) Gourmet Herb (same as last time) – it was a decent kit
4) Salad Greens – 7 varieties of green leaf lettuce
5) Romaine Kit – 4 red and 3 green romaine varieties
6) International Basil – Lemon, Thai, Napolitano, French, Italian, Globe, and red basil
7) French Herb – Chervil, Sorrel, French Basil, Parsley, Sage, Savory, chives 8) Italian Herb – Genovese Basil, Mint, Savory, Parsley, Thyme, Oregano
9) Japanese Herb – Mitsuba, red Shiso, Green Shiso, Nira, Chives, Cress, Shungiku

What would you recommend? Thanks.

~G

Answer Man answers:

I have one also and I think I am ready to try something new also. I was thinking about the salsa kit! I would love to have fresh tomatoes in the kitchen, and the Jalapenos add great flavor to things, especially if you want to make a ceviche or something. So I would say let’s both do the salsa garden!! Have fun!! Good luck and Happy Feasting!!

Michael asks…

Is there any reason to buy $20 herb seeds for the aerogarden kit?

My friend has the Aerogarden seeds on her wedding registry. I think it’s a bit absurd to pay $20 for the seeds of 7 plants when I can go to a nursery and buy the seeds for probably about $3.

What all is in this herb kit? Is it just a bunch of seeds? Can I substitute regular (inexpensive) seeds? How to do a switcheroo here?

Answer Man answers:

The seed kits include growing sponge (pre-seeded), seedpod cups, dome, and nutrient tablets. You could buy the cups, sponges, nutrients, and supply your own seeds. (Your “switcheroo”) http://www.aerogardenofficialstore.com/promotion/index.php?promoName=catalog&pageName=accessories&st=1&cid=20 But that may be more expensive in the long run than the 20 for kits.

Susan asks…

How do I grow my own seeds in an AeroGarden?

I got an AeroGarden 3 for Christmas. The set came with flowers, but I’m more interested in growing herbs to be used medicinally. All the seed kits online for herbs are cooking herbs – some of which I need, but most of which are useless to me.
I’ve already ordered herb seeds to grow without the AeroGarden. Now that I have one, though, I’d like to use it to grow some of my herbs. All the refill items online are rather vague, and refer to other products, such as the “Master Gardener Refill Pack (7-Pod)”. I don’t have the Master Gardener Kit…I just want grow plugs without seeds that I can use in my AeroGarden 3. Will the Master Gardener Refill Pack work? Do they even sell such a thing? Are AeroGarden seeds treated in some way that helps them grow, so that I will not achieve the same results with my own seeds?

If anyone has any info… let me know.
Thanks.
Oh, also… I know people who have an AeroGarden, and the only problem they have had with it is mold. Anyone know how I can avoid this?
Actually, after rooting around on the site a little more, I discovered that the Master Gardener Kits are made for this purpose… but the refills do not include the little plastic baskets. You can’t reuse them unless the plant that was in them dies, because the roots grow around it. So the refills are basically useless… Guess I just have to buy the whole kit.
Unless someone knows otherwise?

Answer Man answers:

I’m going to experiment with mine using refills (when the herbs are done I’ll reuse the plastic cup.) You could also put 6 cell pots (bedding plants are started in them) around the base of the machine, that puppy throws some light.

Found this for you. Http://www.hydroponic-home-garden.com/zencart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3&products_id=33 Does not come pre-seeded.

Nancy asks…

aerogarden Favorites?

Do you have a Aerogarden if so what is your favorite seed kit and what type of aerogarden do you have? Also do you have any other hydroponics or aeroponics. ( PLZ dont say weed ok that is not cool )and (it reases your opisite hormons )

Answer Man answers:

No I don’t have one but they sound like good products.

Linda asks…

How long can you harvest something grown in an AeroGarden?

The AeroGarden looks like a fantastic product. With so many animals in the area I live trying to grown flowers or even food isn’t really doable unless I buy a green house or keep things on the deck. Even with that the temperature swings in weird ways due to living in a mountain area. So the AeroGarden seems like the best way to go.

I know you can grow various types of herbs and vegetables but I have a question about harvesting. How many times can you harvest what you grow?

One harvest and then you have to buy new seed kits?

Or will things such as tomatoes, strawberries, etc keep regrowing?

If you grow flowers are you able to transfer them to normal potting soil or do they simply stay in the AeroGarden, continuing to grow until you tire of them and toss them out?

Thanks.

Answer Man answers:

I have an AeroGarden – the big one – and I love it, but it does take some practice and learning.

It greatly depends on what you grow. I would NEVER try tomatoes in it again. I did excellent with Spinach, Spinach Mustard and Lettuce. I would just remove the outer leaves and the plants kept growing. That was my best crop so far.

Same with the herbs, if you pick them right, to encourage more growth, they just keep growing. Like with sweet basil – after it gets going, you cut the top off and you get two more shutes from the sides, can you can keep doing that. I got a lot of basil – enough to make pesto a few times.

The key is to grow things that grow at the same rate/height, so they don’t fight for light/nutrients. Or if something you are planting grows fast with something else, plant that a bit later.

I have had the best luck doing all of the same thing at once.

Unless you are doing something special like their “dwarf cherry tomatoes” or some special plant, I have had really good luck with normal seeds from the store. They are much cheaper than their seed packs.

Also, once out of their nutrients, I started using liquid fertilizer. You kindof have to play around and see what works.

Hope this helps.

Your Questions About Emergency Survival Kit

Carol asks…

What should be packed inside an Emergency Survival Kit?

Every household should have an Emergency Survival Kit, in case a disaster should occur and you are required to leave your home.

What items must be included in Emergency Survival Kit?
Please cite your source(s) if you have any.

Answer Man answers:

I hope this help… Far more than any thing make sure you keep an extra copy of your important documents in a zip lock bag, just incase of a flood. Birth certificate, social security ard, etc.

David asks…

what do I need for an emergency home survival kit for COLD weather?

I just moved up to the mountains and have already lost power 2x due to bad weather! Im not use to this kind of weather and the locals all tell me that I need to have a emergency kit for home for when the real “bad” weather comes in for winter! So a little help please ?

Answer Man answers:

Well, i live in west virginia, and when a real cold weather storm comes, it’s good to have candles, matches, blankets, a cell phone, a battery powered heater, flashlight, and a battery powered radio. You may also need food/ water, possibly an x-tra change of clothes.

Hope i could help ya!

Paul asks…

What items would you include in your emergency survival kit?

For various disasters or emergencies, you would have to hit the road on foot with whatever you could carry. What would you bring. Don’t worry, I’m not one of those kids running away from home. I’m 26. Even if you don’t have one, please share your ideas.

Answer Man answers:

Well I can list what I have in my basic kit :
garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation

Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities

Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food) Although we have MREs – the shelf life is 3-6 years depending on how you store them, and they are lighter weight, in case you need to hike.
Maps

hand crank radio

a forever flahlight (no batteries needed)

Prescription medications and glasses

powdered milk and diapers

candles – waterproof matches –

Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper – When diluted nine parts water to one part bleach, bleach can be used as a disinfectant. Treat water by using 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water.

Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils, paper towels
family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records
etc-etc-etc

Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation – remeber you can live for weeks without food – but only a few days without water.

Donald asks…

what items do i need in an emergency survival kit?

And, how long does water keep for? Do I need to fill up the bottles everyday? I live with 3 other people and I also have a dog. What supplies will we need?

Answer Man answers:

http://www.quakekare.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=1

these are just a couple of the numerous sites i found, many different survival kits exist depending on what it is intended for.

Ruth asks…

What should be packed inside an emergency survival kit?

Answer Man answers:

You need enough of the following to last you and your family for three or more days..
Enough water to drink, cook & sanitize with, non perishable foods & can opener, any medications, toilet paper, plastic and rubbish bags, first aid kits, candles, matches & lighters, flashlights, battery powered radio to stay in contact with whats happening, batteries to last, gas cooker with enough gas canisters.

You should also have a smaller emergency kit ready incase you and your family have to go, backpacks for each person should be packed along with good durable boots or shoes, warm clothes, sleeping bag, passports and identification, photos of family members incase they cannot be found, and any of the top list which can appropriately fit but is vital for your survival. You should also practice with your family incase of a natural disaster where you will all meet and what to do.

Despite relatively little investment in new power plants and equipment, the average consumer has seen their electric bill more than double in the past 10 years! This far outpaces inflation during that same time period and no one has invested in any nuclear facilities for more than 3 decades so why have the power companies raised our rates so dramatically?
