Your Questions About Survival Food Supplies

Susan asks…

Is stocking up survival supplies for December 21, 2012 nuts?

My husband is stocking up supplies (food, medical supplies, water purifiers, kerosene and heaters, almost everything). December 21, 2012 is the day he turns 60. I think he’s loosing it. What do you think?

Answer Man answers:

Not entirely nuts. It never hurts to have some emergency supplies, although it is possible to take things a bit too far. And make sure that the kerosene is stored safely – There would be a certain irony in being blown up by your emergency fuel reserve.

Mary asks…

Trapped alone on an island with food & water supplies but no survival skills, how long would you likely live?

Answer Man answers:

Well, if there is lots of bugs and gross things probably not very long. I suppose I could do it, depending on what food and water was available.

I will admit, I prefer to be pampered and not one for camping. So, boiling water would make me sick to know what was in there, I would never kill an animal to eat there would have to be fruit, and I hate bugs.

So, based on that, I would say that given the right situation, I could go at least………… An hour! No, I think I could make it a few days, maybe!

Mandy asks…

Is the FDA tampering with survival of the human race with its approval of Viral additives in our food supply?

The FDA has approved a viral cocktail to be sprayed on our foods. Viruses have been approved for use as food additives and a host of virally contaminated foods will be entering our food supply. Live viruses will be sprayed on cold cuts, sausages, hot dogs, sliced turkey, and chicken.

Greedy corporations plan to use one infectious organism to fight another. Bacteria will ingest the bacteriophages resulting in massive viral replication inside the bacteria, until it bursts. This virus and the bacteria’s defensively produced endotoxins will end up in your digestive tract where it may infect normal bacterial cells needed there.

At issue is FDA-approved multi-national fast-food animal farms full of diseased and sickly animals that now require more than the heavy use of antibiotics during growth and radiation during food processing. Our immune system are highly reactive and sensitive to bacterial endotoxins.

How do you like the idea of buying virus-infested food for your family?

Answer Man answers:

Its been going on for decades as farmers used the most deadly toxins as we all grew up for crops and what was in animal feed. It only goes through the fda when a company wants to make alot of money. Its all the preservatives in foods that is killing us.

Lizzie asks…

how much food and water minimum do a grown chihuahua and bassett hound need daily?

im starting a survival supplies cache, and i was wondering about food/water for my pets. is it by weight?

Answer Man answers:

Survival supplies? – WHAT DO YOU KNOW THAT I DON’T !!!

I guess your best yardstick would be by weight, but if I went by the weight chart on most food bags, my Bassets would explode!!

Water – I really don’t know because I confess to changing water bowls very often (as Bassets are so slobbery!!). I like mine to have a fresh water supply at all times. If it’s down to bottled water, I’d have a hard time (or my hounds would).

Robert asks…

Where is the best place to buy wholesale food?

Where can I get the best value on bulk foods? Specifically as a “survivalfood. I’m talking a year supply for one adult or more between 500 to 4000$. The way the economy is going, I wouldn’t be surprised if the dollar completely collapses ;-) . Better safe than sorry as we enter into this depression.

Answer Man answers:

I have a year supply of food..no kidding..the way the economy is doing we are going to end up eating the cat or so.
I bought all my food in a place located in utah www.beprepared.com they have everything you need to food storage, I thing the mormons have a culture of food storage and they have everything set up for this..dry milk, whole grains, already prepared food and water supply…their prices are the best because everything they sale is oriented to last for years in storage. Costco is good, Sams, etc…the thing with them is to check out the due dates of the products .
Just google..food storage…emergy essentials and you will get a good list of resources..emergency essentials base in utah Salt Lake City Utah is the one that I has been using to buy grains..milk..and this products could last for 10-40 years. Hope this help

Disaster Preparedness? I Want to Be Ready

I keep hearing everyone  talking about the flu pandemic, 2012, and the possibility of war (Iran, al queada, North Korea). There seems to be anxiety everywhere. Being born and raised in a Hurricane zone, I’m always a little prepared for some disasters with the supplies I stock up on for Hurricane season, but looking at what else could be coming at me, I want to prepare a little more. I’m not buying in to the 2012 scare, but I am worried about the flu and the nuts in the middle east with ambitions to wipe us off of the face of the earth. Another problem we are facing is the dismal economy, with times the way they are, who can afford to prepare for the worst and stock up on survival gear, emergency food and water? I know things are bad, but we should be asking who can’t afford to be prepared for flu, nuclear war, or just civil unrest?

I’ve started buying a case of bottled water every other week when I grocery shop. I’m searching for 2 for 1′s on canned vegetables and fruits. I’m searching the Internet for coupons for the necessities. My problem now has become, how much should I stock up? It’s just two of us right now, but I have family close by that I know will need help, too. If I count my family, then I will not have enough room, or money to stock up on everything. So my new goal is to convince my friends and family to stock up, too. I put it this way, if you stock up and need it, you’ll be glad you did. If you stock up and don’t need it, or some perishable items start to lose their shelf life, then you have a lot of canned goods to donate or make casseroles with. I hope they’re listening.

Your Questions About Food Storage Chart

Steven asks…

when looking at the electric bill what does other mean on the pie chart?

they give catagories like cooling/lighting/hotwater/food storage/cooking in a pie chart to tell you what type of usage you are using. but my” other” is the same amount as cooling which cant be right so i am trying to think of what” other” could be so i can stop using it so much .. haha but seriously anyone know what other is

Answer Man answers:

They are actually showing you the industry averages. The couldn’t possibly know how you are using electricity without a meter on every plug and fixture. Other would include anything plugged into a socket that is not listed under another category.

Donald asks…

How many cups of food should I feed my 80 lb boxer?

I always open fed my 2 boxers because one of them has always been small and pretty thin. But now my younger girl is getting a little chunky so I want to start feeding them on a schedual. I have large container I put the food in for storage and so I threw away the bag with the serving size chart on it. Also how much should my poor little 35 lb girl eat?
She isnt over weight but she is getting there. LOL……. I just want to start controling her food intake so she doesnt become overweight. Boxers have short lifespans and I want them to be healthy.
My small boxer we think is a mix. We got her at the pound 10 years ago and she was skin and bones. She gained weight but has always been thin. She has been checked by several vets who say she is very healthy and not to worry. She is just naturally small.

Answer Man answers:

80lbs for a female Boxers is quite heavy. Even males should be under that. Is she taller than the standard? (24inches at shoulder)

It takes some trial and error but guessing works the best. Myself – I have a Boxer bitch that’s difficult to keep weight on. I feed her a full bowl at both meals. It’s just the only way to keep her at a good weight. The other Boxer bitch we have is very difficult to keep from gaining weight (which she needs to lose right now). She gets roughly 1 and 1/2 cups a day which is divided into two meals.

I suggest start trying around 2 cups at each meal (if you’re doing a two meal schedule) to your 35lbs girl. Watch her weight. If she starts getting too heavy, back it off. If she’s not gaining or she’s even losing weight, add some more. 1/2 cup increments seem to work best.

For your 80 lbs girl, feed her the amount you’ve originally given her. Start backing it off. I suggest getting her to 2 cups a day. If she’s within the breed standard for height, try to get her anywhere from 70 to 65 lbs. That’s still heavy, but probably okay for her. Like with the other one, watch her weight. Back it off if she’s gaining weight. Don’t let her lose too much too fast.

And you always have to take into consideration – what’s their activity level? Height? How much of that weight is muscle, how much is fat? Can you easily feel their ribs? That’s why these questions can be hard to answer – we have no idea what those answers are. And when in doubt – ask the vet.

Also, if you don’t already, try seperating the dogs when they’re eating. Put one in the bathroom, one in the kitchen. Something like that. That insures they are both eating the correct amount.

Mary asks…

what do you think is the solution for this problem?

Benihana of Tokyo is a restaurant own by Aoki, he is a Japanese, but he builds his restaurant in New YOrk coz he discovered that Americans love exotic food. He starts as an ordinary person. The walls, ceiling, beams, artifacts and decorative lights of a Benihana are all from Japan. The building materials are gathered from old houses there, carefully disassembled, and shipped in peices to the U.S. where they are resembles by one of his father’s two crew of Japanese carpenter.

Some restaurant like myself have more fun than others, says AOKI, youthful pres. ofBenihana of Tokyo. Between 1964, when he opened his first location and 1972 he had gone more deficit net worth to being pres. of a chain of 15 restaurants that grossed over $12 million per yr. Benihana was named after a small red flower that grew near the front door of the unit restaurant.

Rocky’s first unit on the West Side was such a success that it paid 6 months, the 2nd unit 3 blocks away on the East Side simply to cater to the overflow of the benihana West, the 3rd unit is in Chicago had proved to be the largest money maker coz it grossed approximately @1.3 million/year, the 4th unit was in San Francisco and the 5th was a joint venture in Las Vegas in 1969.

By 1972, Benihana was basically in steak house wit a difference Aoki borrowed his method of cooking from his father. One of the things that Aoki worried in his analysis was that, number one problems the availability and cost of labor by eliminating the need for conventional kitchen with hibachi table arrangement and the other thing s he discovered is that food storage and wastage contribute significantly the cuerband of the typical restaurant. I finally invest on historical authenticity. When Aoki has unit of Benihana the chefs and the staffs are considered as Key to its success coz they are highly trained. The philosophy of the restaurant roat business is simply to make people happy.

Runs carpenters, consultants, and editor for constitution/ volume feeding magazine, sumed up his perception for a two main problems. What is Benihana really selling? The problem of perceptions was shown through different exhibits. And there are 9 exhibits these are the operating statistics for a typical service restaurant, floor plan, organization chart, the costumers thank, summary of the Benihama’s marketing philosophy, benihana’s of Tokyo advertisement. Two philosophies of the steak, the mission of Aoki.

What exactly is your question?

Lisa asks…

my family is so stupid! what would you do?

hello i am not veronica that owns this profile but her friend, lydia. i just want to ask a quick ? of you guys.

i am 19 and am expecting a baby in 5 weeks. my then-fiance recentley walked out a few weeks ago leaving me w/ a whole load of bills at my house, which i am renting. my rent is $380 and then theres utilities w/ a seperate water bill and seperate electric. i have a cell phone to pay for too. i cannot work until 6 to 8 weeks post partum. my fiance had been paying for all of this until he walked out. my mom told me if i can get money to pay the landlord (which is my aunt) she will pay my utilities. my other aunt and friend have decided to split my phone bill. my mom has been wanting me to move back in w/ her, which is right next door. she has a husband (my step dad) who lives there too along w/ our adult cousin and my 2 sisters ten and 13. the house is only 2 bedroom so my parents have a room, my sisters have another room and my cousin sleeps on the couch or floor downstairs. i got my friend to loan me 200 and another friend to loan me 100. i just needed 80 more and was working on getting that from my grandma for doing work around her home. (cleaning, ect)

i gave the 300 to my mom for her to pay her sister a rent payment and tell her i will have the remaining $$ the next week. my mom says theres no point in having me be in debt to people and having to borrow $ for the next 3-4 months. my bills are already low b/c my shower head is broken so i shower and mostly eat on my moms side. (our houses are in a double) i have the food card and medical card so i can get food my bills are just a problem b/c i have 0 income. i am an stna and have a job lined up to start in april making 10 an hour, so paying ppl back will be done in the next 6-8 months.

my mother, however has her own ideas. she took it upon herself to call up my aunt and tell her i’m going to move back in with her b/c i couldn’t come up w/ the money in time. my aunt gave me till feb first but my mom told her thats ok i’m willing to move right now asap. then my mom spent 50 of my rent money on her and my dad to eat at outback and 40 to buy my sisters and cousins pizza and the another 30 to get my sisters haircuts.and of course now has no reason to pay utilities. so i’m going to use the $ i get from my grandmother and whats left of what my mom did not spend to cover the utilities.

i asked my mom about this and she said oh i will pay you back but i know thats not going to happen. she never pays any1 back unless its small things like borrowing a dollar or two until my dad gets home or something. my mom babysits and make a few hundred a week and my dad is a roofer which is seasonal work. my grown cousin doesn’t work either.

so now i am forced to move back next door-which i really don’t want to do. i will sleep down stairs in the corner of the living room in my bed w/ my baby in her crib or bassinett next to me. i have a care cart from walmart for her that will hold her diapers and such but that has to get stuck in the bathroom b/c there isn’t room in the living room. my stuff and my babys stuff like clothes and toys and any extra anything will be in tubs in an upstairs “play room” that is only about 11 by 4 feet.

i just got a bunch of new house things for christmas and they now must go into storage. i know i should be grateful for my mom being so generous when shew doesn’t have too, but honestly if you knew my mom. she is pushy and only wants me to live w/ her b/c she wants me to stay dependant on her and not be independant or have my own things. and also so i can clean the house and cook for her like i did in my teen years. i will have to work 2nd shift when i start my job which means sleeping late into the a/m. like i said my mom babysits a lot of toddlers who don’t go to school yet so w/ my bed in the living room i won’t be able to sleep past 6 am.
to top it all off, i got put on the chore chart w/ my sisters. my mom says i can help out if i am staying there and i said yea but i don’t need to be on a stupid chart for babies. i can already tell the chart is a way for me to be made to do plenty of work and not have any reason to not do what my mom wants me to do. what would you do here?

Answer Man answers:

Well first of all, that jerk of your fiance should give some child support. Anyway, I would start saving up some money, in my own little place from job and such, to save up for a home in the future. Girl your going to have to live with this now. I know you don’t like it but there’s not much you can do. Maybe look for another guy that can support you? I am not an expert but I hope you make through! I pray for you

Linda asks…

What’s this? Kuwait prepares for US war w/ Iran?

Have you seen anything on these aircraft carriers in OUR news?

“Govt finalizing war emergency plan
Published Date: August 07, 2008

KUWAIT: The government is finalizing its emergency plan this week in order to ensure that the country is protected from foreign dangers in case the regional situation escalates and a war breaks out between Iran and the USA.

An unnamed senior official revealed that the government has learnt that two aircraft carriers are scheduled to arrive in the Gulf and the Red Sea in preparation for the expected war at any time. The official said that this information led the government to accelerate its emergency plan preparations, which include arrangements for protecting all sectors and vital installations.

The senior official added that acting premier Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah has asked the Interior Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Khalid Al-Sabah and other ministers concerned with devising and implementing the emergency plan to hold meetings with the different government departments in order to discuss the plan and submit reports to reveal and resolve possible weaknesses before war breaks out in the area. He told ministers that Kuwait would not be immune from war and the government must be ready for any emer
gency.

Ah, here’s something: http://www.thepeoplesvoice.org/cgi-bin/blogs/voices.php/2008/08/09/p27612

The lead American ship in [recent war games w/ France off Iran], the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN71) and its Carrier Strike Group Two (CCSG-2) are now headed towards Iran along with the USS Ronald Reagon (CVN76) and its Carrier Strike Group Seven (CCSG-7) coming from Japan.

They are joining two existing USN battle groups in the Gulf area: the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN72) with its Carrier Strike Group Nine (CCSG-9); and the USS Peleliu (LHA-5) with its expeditionary strike group.

Likely also under way towards the Persian Gulf is the USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) and its expeditionary strike group, the UK Royal Navy HMS Ark Royal (R07) carrier battle group, assorted French naval assets including the nuclear hunter-killer submarine Amethyste and French Naval Rafale fighter jets on-board the USS Theodore Roosevelt. These ships took part in the just completed Operation Brimstone.
The build up of naval forces in the Gulf will be one of the largest multi-national naval armadas since the First and Second Gulf Wars. The intent is to create a US/EU naval blockade (which is an Act of War under international law) around Iran (with supporting air and land elements) to prevent the shipment of benzene and certain other refined oil products headed to Iranian ports. Iran has limited domestic oil refining capacity and imports 40% of its benzene. Cutting off benzene and other key products would cripple the Iranian economy.”
The article then lists at least 37 vessels on the way to the area, with more ‘likely’ to be sent.

So.

What’s up?
there’s a little on the two carriers in the LA times blog page, but so far I’m not finding a lot of the ‘major’ media on this…

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/babylonbeyond/2008/08/iran-what-will.html

ken, the first source is the one I quoted. The second is predictable. I assume Bush / Pelosi et al. just don’t care.
Ken, yeah, but THIS POST came up as number 4…. and the others are blogs. I’m searching too, and finding stuff, but not from any major media so far.
slew, maybe but there is that resolution for a blockade of Iran still in Congress.
quite a lot to happen while Congress is on vacation…

Answer Man answers:

If I had a crystal ball and looked into it, I think I’d see Obama (assuming he gets the vote) using expert speech-writers to “explain” to the U.S. Why it is in our vital interest to finally deal decisively with this hostile threat.

All who supported him as a candidate for peace will buy it, hook, line and sinker. Much like those of us who supported Bush as the candidate who would deliver us from unwise nation-building of the Clinton years, bought in to the Iraq ‘logic’.

And so it goes; And so it goes…

Carol asks…

How Many are Prepared For Dog Trauma and/or Medical Emergencies?

I know I’m not all the way prepared, and I just thought about this, but, I know what I need. I just wonder how many that are in Y-Q&A – Pets – Dogs now are prepared and if you know what all you might need.

And, if those that are prepared might share with others what a good preparation plan and supplies would be in their opinion?

IT’s Spring! Don’t forget to change the Batteries in your Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Detectors!
I know some things I need to do or already do or have include the following. If any have any other input, please share.

1. Vet’s PH# posted in Fridge and pre-programed in phone.

2. A Back-up Vet’s Phone Number and alternative Clinic.

3.. A First Aid Kit for Dogs or Humans with plenty of like supplies. Includes items for wounds, dressing, scissors, tweezers, items for stings, and bites. Salves, and other topical treatments.

4. Activated Charcoal and other Poison Treatments that are ingested.

5. Toll Free Number to the APSCA National Pet Poison Hotline: 888-426-4435 -or- Angell Poison Control Hotline for Pets: 877- 2ANGELL

6. Contacts to Family, Friends or Kennel in case of Personal Emergency to have Dogs/Pets watched.

7. A Bloat or Stomach Torsion Emergency Kit for Big Chested Breeds.

A few of these things I need or need to do. Any other ideas to add to such a list are welcome and appreciated.

Answer Man answers:

I am fully prepared. I just restocked my dog med kit and have everything I hope I will never need. Just took a refresher course on dog CPR too.

John asks…

which book should i write first?

i am in the process of writing two books.
i have all my notes in order for both, now i just don’t know which one to focus more on.
i am really into these two subjects so i started writing both but it has been difficult to do research, type, compile, organize, brainstorm, etc. for two books.

Book One: about survivalism, disaster planning, emergency planning, self-sufficiency, preparation, etc. a complete survival guide.

Book Two: a complete Salem, MA book.
the only book you will ever need to read to know everything about Salem inluding full history, travel guide, historical sites, etc.

Which one would be more marketable?
Which one would you rather read about?

opinions? (and don’t say neither!)

Answer Man answers:

Go with book one. Salem is changing so fast these days by the time your book comes out it will be outdated. Survival info is timeless and has a broader audience.

Steven asks…

?Russians to Rapidly Build 5000 Bomb Shelters in Moscow by 2012, WHY?

What do they know that our government is not talking about?

In 2006 the European Union rapidly drew up and deployed plans to build a “Doomsday Seed Vault” to store millions of seeds from countries around the world in case of a catastrophic event. Previous reports suggest that the US Government Is Preparing For Unlikely Events Like War, Catastrophic Collapse of Society, and Even Asteroids. Among the preparations, the US government, like Russia, is building underground bunkers and military bases. The U.S. is reportedly building these bunkers so rapidly, and on such a large scale, that private contractors are unable to acquire materials to build bunkers for individual clients. In recent years we’ve also learned that the US government is one of, if not the largest buyer of survival foods like freeze dried foods and MRE’s for emergency preparedness deployment. We’ve also recently learned that Department of Homeland Security has committed to “regionalizing” supplies across 15 regional emergency supply warehouses.

According to RT, the official story from government officials is that the bunkers being built in Russia are for the general population and are necessary because there are currently only enough shelters to house about half of Moscow’s 11 million inhabitants. Most of the shelters built before and after World War II are either dilapidated or have been converted into public areas like restaurants.

Though the bunkers are supposed to be designed to shelter the population in the event of a nuclear attack, government officials say it’s only a precaution and they do not expect such an attack or nuclear outbreak (e.g.
Chernobyl) to occur. Neither RT or the Russian government provided estimates for the cost of the facilities. A Popular Mechanics article that reviewed a number of different types of bunkers and building practices had varying prices depending on the type of shelter. Since the proposed Russian bunkers would hold roughly 1000 people each (based on the population count and other details), one could estimate that the lowest price point for a bunker this size, with basic necessities like bathrooms and reserve food for a day or two, may run in the area of around $100,000 – $200,000. This would put a conservative price tag for 5000 shelters anywhere from half a billion to a billion dollars. A significant investment, indeed.

The question that is likely on the minds of the preparedness community, especially those who have followed the rapid expansion of preparedness initiatives is, “why the haste?”

Do the European Union, United States, and Russia anticipate some event to occur in the future, or are these measures being taken strictly as precautionary measures – just in case?

One can only hope that governments are simply being proactive and not actively planning to deal with a catastrophic event unforeseen by the general public, but known to certain elements within emergency planning agencies.

This and other reports we’ve covered over the last eighteen months should serve as a warning to those who don’t believe a widespread disaster, natural or man-made, can occur.

If governments are spending billions of dollars on emergency preparations, there’s probably a good reason for it. It could be global stimulus projects during tough economic times, corrupt politicians working contruction deals for their buddies, or maybe they really are planning for a disaster.

In an age where nuclear war is not supposed to be a threat because of disarmament and unified global governance, it is quite interesting that the Russians are making such a large investment.

Answer Man answers:

Well to be fair, they were probably really drunk on vodka when they decided to build that many.
