How Can We Survive Without a Cell Phone?

We’ve all asked that question “How did we survive without cell phones?” Not only do our cell phones become our totems, but we have created a world in which we are so dependent on them. Additionally, we’ve weakened our minds because of this dependency on them, so much so, that we don’t even memorize phone numbers any more. And cell phone companies have made it too easy for us not to use our brains by introducing technology that can transfer phone numbers from one phone to a newly purchased one.

One of the evening news programs did a story a while ago, in which they interviewed young adults and senior citizens and asked them memorizations questions: home phone numbers and important dates. The young adults couldn’t remember anything, yet the older folks remembered quit a lot (one gentleman remembered his home phone number from the 1940′s).

Somehow I am not convinced that all these advancements in technology are truly helping us. In regards to certain advancements (i.e. cell phones), I think these advancements are actually hurting us.

What ever happened to the good old days when you could just walk on over the the neighbors home and chat on the porch?

How To Survive A Cheating Spouse

In this article we will talk about how to survive a cheating spouse, and also, how to come to terms when it comes to dealing with a cheating spouse.

First of all, depending on how long you have been together, you will want to have a long hard think alone whether you want to stay in the relationship. I guess this applies to both people in the relationship.

Cheating can be a heart wrenching experience, and dealing with a cheating spouse first has to come after the decision as to whether or not you want to stay together as a couple.

If you do decide to stay together and want to try and survive a cheating spouse, then it is going to be a long hard time for you both. Building back trust is a long, slow process, but some couples have proved that it can be done.

Personally, I don’t agree or believe with going behind you partners back. It would be much better to always try and communicate problems in the relationship before doing something you may regret for the rest of your life.

However, sometimes in life, people do cheat on their spouse, and it can destroy people’s lives when they do. Some people may choose not to forgive their partners betrayal, and this is a choice anyone is free to make, however, if the relationship has lasted a long time, there may be other complications to think about when dealing with a cheating spouse, such as children, other family members, and even the fact of do you really want to start again with someone new, when you have built up everything together, through the good and the bad.

As you can see from the above, there are many things to think about.

So if one chooses to go alone and go their separate ways after the affair, how can one truly survive a cheating spouse?

To be honest, some people may not survive a cheating spouse, depending on the length of the relationship; it may indeed destroy part of a person’s soul and heart.

For this kind of situation, we would be lying if we could offer you any advice that may help you, simply because of the time and love you have shared with that person. The only thing we would say is that in life, you have to move forward. If you surrender to life, and it happens to many people across the world, you could well become dead alive. What we mean by this is that you could just give up and become so depressed and in denial, that you could give up on life, and slowly to start to rot away until you no longer want to be apart of this life. This is sad, and we hate to sound negative, but it can be the case for some people.

Here are some guidelines for dealing with a cheating spouse that we recommend anyone read if they are currently dealing with a cheating spouse:

1) In life, we must move forward, no matter what happens, slowly moving forward is the only way you eventually move on

2) If you do become a victim to an unfaithful partner and you choose not to stay, then we suggest you find out what your dreams are, and start a path to slowly follow them, everything else may fit in with this. Again, it may not because some people will not ever get over there past, no matter what they believe. Emotional turmoil is the biggest and hardest obstacle to overcome in life.

3) Be active, dont lie around and think, time makes things easier, in time we heal, and with time, we may even forgive. Remember, life is hard, mean place, it isn’t easy, and dealing with a cheating spouse is part of the many aspects of life.

4) Finally, we believe if that one truly loves one, they will not cheat, and do whatever they can to solve issues in the relationship. If one does cheat, did they truly have the commitment that love should bring? Giving up and breaking up is easy, going for the long haul is something that doesn’t happen as much these days. People seem to believe they don’t have to stay with that person, maybe so, but if you choose someone to spend your life with, seeing it through to the end makes you both winners.

Do you think your spouse may be cheating on you?

Have you ever wondered what exactly you would do if you were stranded in a wilderness setting? There are many wonderful resources out there (and some not so wonderful) to teach you about the basics of wilderness survival. However, most go into levels of detail about arcane situations that most people would never find themselves in. My intent here is to provide a basic overview of survival based on the “Rules of 3.”

All you have to do is commit to memory these Survival Rules of 3, and if the situation ever arises, you will know what you have to deal with first. In a nutshell, the Rules of 3 are:

3 Minutes without Air

3 Hours without Shelter

3 Days without Water

3 Weeks without Food

For all intents and purposes, unless you have found yourself (or more likely, someone else has found you) in a medical situation, you do not have to worry about the first rule. Common sense, and physical urges, would tell us if we were under water, we have less than 3 minutes to get to air.

So, in a wilderness survival setting, our first priority is shelter. In extreme conditions, the average person needs to find shelter from the elements within 3 hours. Obviously, cold conditions are the main target of this rule. Keep in mind that being wet or hot would also apply here. When you find yourself in a survival situation, the first thing you must do is find shelter from the elements. If you have a tent, put it up. If not, you can construct a lean to from the natural resources you find in the area. If you need shelter immediately, you can find a natural rock overhang or something similar to get out of the snow, rain, and/or wind. Remember, you have to protect yourself from hypothermia. After you have built a shelter, make a fire. A fire will keep you warm and also lift your spirits.

Once you have secured a good shelter and fire, your next thoughts should turn to water. Human beings can not live beyond 3 days without water. Unless you are on a backpacking trip, you probably do not have iodine tablets or some other method of clearing water of bacteria. You should look for immediate water sources. If you find them, you can boil the water for safety. Otherwise, you may to use other resources, such as making a solar still or using the evaporation method. More on these methods can be found elsewhere.

The final Rule of 3 is 3 weeks without food. Many survival shows on TV or survival websites trump up methods of find food or the priority of finding food. The truth is most people who are lost are found within 3 days. Food should be your last priority. And also remember, you don’t want to spend more energy finding good than you will get from the food. You want to conserve energy, you want to stay in one spot, and you want to stay safe. However, let’s say you are in a survival situation long enough to need food. Your thoughts can then turn to finding something to eat. Unless you are an expert on local plants, do not eat berries, leaves, or mushrooms that you think might be edible. You could easily die. You also do not want to spend time and energy hunting animals far off from your campsite. Considering that you want to conserve energy, the ideal method is to create snares to catch small animals such as squirrels or rabbits. While the chances of catching one is slim, remember that you will not expend much energy using this method, and you don’t need much food to stay alive.

One final note about wilderness survival: always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. This is the best guarantee that you will survive if you found yourself in a survival situation. If no one knows that you are missing, then no one will be looking for you.

What Are Outdoor Survival Kits?

Outdoor survival kits can be purchased as is when they’re pre-made, or they can often also be the result of a do it yourself project. There is no one set right or wrong way to set up or put together the ideal survival kit, but one thing to understand right off the bat is that if someone is trying to charge more for an “outdoor” specialty kit versus a “regular” kit, don’t fall for the rip off. The two are pretty much synonyms.

An outdoor emergency kit is meant to help a person deal with the elements, which are inherently outdoors. The materials in these kits have to take into account what would be needed if you were stuck outside and had to deal with the elements. A flint and steel and a cotton ball for starting fires, water purification tablets to make safe drinking water, and gauze to bandage wounds are just three of the materials that should be included in any such kit.

Anything you can think of that could be helpful in a conventional wilderness survival kit are the same materials that you should find in any high quality outdoor kit. This can include fishing line, medication, knife, fire starters – anything that can possibly be of use when out in any outdoor environment.

Many people prefer to make their own because they can customize the kits based on specific needs, environments, and skills, but there are plenty of already made ones that can work just as well.

And if you would like to learn more about outdoor survival kits, or if maybe you’re just interested in basic survival kits in general, then you will want to take a look at this online blog.

In emergency situations, one of the biggest problems is to focus on what matters most. That’s why in the field of emergency medicine, we use acronyms and steps like the “ABC’s” to help us control panic and remember what we should do first, then second, etc…

I was an EMT and WEMT and I taught First Responders for years. It was always interesting to see how people reacted in emergency situations. And over the years, I grew to really love acronyms because of how they helped people focus when the chips were down.

Well survival is no different, we still need to control panic and prioritize our efforts. This is where the “Rule of 3′s” comes in.

The Rule of 3′s simply stated is you have:

3 minutes without AIR

3 hours without SHELTER

3 days without WATER

3 weeks without FOOD

So what does all this mean? It tells us where our priorities should be in a survival situation.

First, we should focus on all life threatening conditions making sure we’ll still be breathing in the near future. Next, we should worry about shelter because more people die of exposure than any other incident in the outdoors. Next is water. And then finally food, which is last, not first. You would be surprised at how long a human can go without food (we’re a little spoiled in modern society in the area of food).

Search and rescue statistics show most people are rescued within 72 hours, so if you handle the first 2 priorities, you’re most likely going to make it.

If things do go longer, you know what’s next — water. And finally, last but not least, food. The “Rule of 3′s” (just like the “ABC’s”) is a tool to help you control panic and remember in any survival situation what your steps are and what matters most.

More important than food and perhaps even more important than fire, water is necessary for survival. Maybe it is obvious, but our bodies are comprised of a lot of it.

You can harvest water in a variety of ways. Unless you live in Michigan (the Great Lakes State) or Minnesota (Land of 10,000 Lakes) or such locales where ponds and lakes are prevalent, free-flowing water may not always be readily available. Standing water can be a bit sketchy, so if you don’t have a kit to test or a way to purify, you need to seek it elsewhere.

Plants are some of the easiest to locate and most reliable sources of clean water. Many of them hold droplets of rain on the leaves and others house plenty of moisture in their stems.

Avoid drinking from storm drains, sewers, and puddles with rainbow sheen. Not all that is wet is water, so use your other senses to help determine whether or not it is in fact water.

If a plant is growing in soil that is near urban areas, the ground water may be contaminated. In this case, the more rustic the venue the better your chances are of finding healthier sources. Of course, this works to your advantage – if you are in a survival situation, you are probably pretty far out in the wild anyway.

Use caution when acquiring water from plants in the wild. If you aren’t sure whether or not a plant is poisonous or not, don’t use it. Remember the unfortunate kid at summer camp that ran through the poison ivy in shorts? Now imagine trying to scratch the back of your throat when it itches!

More often than not, you may be able to trust grapevines, birch tree sap, maple tree sap, and thistles. Some plants look like other plants that you really don’t want to use for water collection. Grapevines have a poisonous look-alike, the Canada Moonseed vine, so be careful.

Instead of pressing your luck by squeezing what may or may not be grapevines, press the wood fibers of birch trees in your fist and point your thumb towards your open mouth.

Remember: water can be acquired from a variety of natural sources, but use your better judgment and never assume.

When the chips are down, you need tools you can depend on. Check out the Bushman Survival Knife and other Wilderness survival gear.

Tucson Arizona is one of hot spots for Illegal Alien civil unrest and although mostly peaceful it is going to be one of the major spots in an upcoming protest march. This issue recently came up in an online think tank and one member from Tucson state;

“Here in Tucson the High school students are chanting; “Si Se Puede” and waving Che Guevarra flags really have no idea what they are talking about. Every student we’ve talked to is clueless as to what is going on and they make themselves look like a bunch of uneducated delinquent kids who just want to get out of class.”

In Maryland same thing the school has given them extra credit for participating in public demonstrations, totally sick, unbelievable really. Civil Disobedience is one thing, but government (school) sponsored is another thing. I talked with an ESL teacher at a coffee shop there in Tucson and he told me of these issues as well. Also with the Minute Men Vigilante Forces on the Border, a problem in Tucson could easily come to a head and we should not allow the illegal immigration issue to turn into a race issue, but rather keep the issue and the point of the argument between “illegal” immigration and what to do about the problem.

Namely; Biometric ID Cards, streamlined legal immigration system, sponsor programs, work programs and securing the borders. I hope you will all listen to reason on all sides of this issue and consider viable solutions to this Out of Control illegal immigration problem in the United States, Arizona and especially cities like Tucson which are being over run with illegal alien invaders. Consider all this in 2006.

A General Guide To Survival Planning

Survival is easy if the proper steps are taken. This cannot cover specific elements like the possibility of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The three main categories to plan for survival are preparedness, basic survival, and a plan to rebuild. To be prepared you must define a scope for your plan, for example if you are planning for a flood include only those things that involve that flood don’t plan for everything all at once, such as a terrorist attack , Hurricane, and flood.  That is too much to take on all at once. Basic survival means making sure you have enough supplies for all of the people that depend on you for survival. For example if you have a 72 hour survival kit for four people, and you have planned to survive a Hurrican strike for three days, then your elderly neighbor needs help,  your supplies will no longer last the duration of 72 hours. Lastly, rebuild have a general plan on the short term survival, but also have in mind a plan for after the event so if there was a flood you could resume normal life as soon as possible.

Where Did Terrorism Go?

Jimmy Buffett’s Under The Big Top Tour begins Feb. 20 in Jacksonville, Florida and is scheduled to end Sept. 4 in Bristow Virgina.

This is Buffett’s umpteenth tour of North America and it’s supporting his latest release, “Buffet Hotel.” That’s not a misspelling. “Buffet Hotel” is the name of a hotel in the landlocked nation of Mali.

Buffett discovered the hotel on a recent trip to West Africa.

Highlights of the ‘Under The Big Top’ tour include a pair of Jimmy Buffett concerts in Mansfield, Massachusetts, two Buffett concerts at the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, New Jersey, and a Jimmy Buffet show at the Nikon At Jones Beach Theatre in Wantagh, New York.

For those who have never had tickets to a Jimmy Buffet concert there are a few things you need to know before you attend. For those who have attended a Buffet concert here are all the things you “can’t remember.”

First, and foremost, Buffett fans are called “Parrotheads.” Young fans, or Parrothead offspring, are called “Parakeets.” The term originated in 1985 at a Jimmy Buffett concert in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was actually coined by Timothy B. Schmit, than a member of the Coral Reefer Band and now a member of the Eagles.

Buffett is lot like the Grateful Dead and Phish in that he’s a touring act. It’s better to see him live than listen to his albums on an iPod. However, Buffett is 63-years-old and sings about drinking, partying, and drinking. In order to keep himself above ground, Buffett has adopted a performance schedule that only includes Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

There are exceptions to this rule. In May, Buffett has a Saturday night concert in Noblesville, Indiana at the Verizon Wireless Music Center. Then he performs Monday at the Riverbed Music Center in Cincinnati.

Nonetheless, if you want to see Buffett in concert keep your Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday nights open (as well as your Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday mornings).

The “Big 9″ is a term used to describe the nine songs Buffett usually plays at his shows. Now this doesn’t mean that when Buffett performs in Columbia, South Carolina for example he’ll play all nine of these songs, but chances are very good (at least historically) that you’ll hear the following…

1. “Margaritaville”

2. “Come Monday”

3. “Fins”

4. “Volcano”

5. “A Pirate Looks At Forty”

6. “Cheeseburger in Paradise”

7. “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes”

8. “It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere”

9. “One Particular Harbour”

Keep in mind that neither Buffett nor the Coral Refer Band uses the term “Big 9.” The term is completely the construct of Parrotheads.

Other things to be prepared for at a Jimmy Buffett concert: he will often start the show with a cover song; sometimes he plays a song that has a local tie-in (for instance he played “Sweet Caroline” at a show at Boston’s Fenway Park); the second set usually begins with slower songs; and the band is usually introduced sometimes in the first encore.

Sadly, Terroism Is Back

I wrote a short post a few weeks ago entitled “Where Did Terrorism Go?”, unfortunately I also used that post to vent my feelings on the current administration in general. My main point of that post was meant to cover the administrations attempt to replace “terrorism” with “enemy combatants” (is the another kind of combatant?) and other PC type terms.

I’m sad to see another attack by terrorists on our country. I am proud to see that alert passengers took action and stopped the coward. I am extremely glad to see the administration use the term “terrorist” again. This is what we are, and will be fighting for years to come, terrorists. It looks like this administration is starting to realize we are fighting terrorists and they are calling them what they truly are. This administration still has a lot of growing up to do, this, and his Oslo speech, seem to show he is taking his daily briefings and threats seriously, but he has a long way to go.

Thank God there were only minor injuries and not a mass loss of life today on the Detroint bound Delta / Northwest airlines flight from Amsterdam. It sounds like the only serious injury was to the Nigerian terrorist who tried to detonate the bomb.
